Overview
This UX research project explored redesigning Instagram to better support safe, interest-based communities for younger users. Guided by interviews with a high school counselor, we identified a lack of visible and trustworthy community spaces and focused on improving the Discover and Community pages. Our Figma prototype introduced features such as interest-tagged communities, public and private groups, community previews, and simplified navigation to encourage interaction over passive consumption. The redesign preserves Instagram’s core photo-sharing purpose while creating a safer, more engaging environment for students, creators, and communities to connect meaningfully.
Problem Statement
How might we improve Instagram’s
layout to show more communities for
younger audiences who needs a safe
space?
We redesigned Instagram to create interest-based, friendly communities where users of all ages, including individuals who are not tech-savvy, may interact with each other easily. The new design promotes creativity and interaction without straying from Instagram's initial intent, which was for photo sharing and personal moments

• Private & Public communities
• Communities based on user interest
Unique community feature and new purpose of interacting with users gives Instagram a new identity
More opportunities for user to user interaction

Approach/Proccess
Conclusion
Our re-design of the Instagram layout and the implementation of our interest-based
communities will surely see increased interaction between users. Businesses will also
start to interact with their respective communities. Most importantly, Rory Moore is now able to interact with her students in a respectable manner.
With these new features, students now have a safer space online to interact and connect with one another!
